Re: “Atheists in Arkansas

I read the article and was impressed by the balanced, informative approach by the author. I had to check to make sure it was written in the US, because you sure don't see balanced and informative happening here often.

Realizing that it is hopeless beforehand, I wonder if Mr. Pope realizes how silly some of his statements sound to anyone who bases their life on reason--

A couple of quick examples

The Oh-Really???
"I didn't make up any of this. You'll find these ideas and themes in the New Testament written circa 1st century AD."
You may as well have said “Verily in Spiderman 13, Spidey said...” Any cursory look at the Bible shows it was a recipe altered repeatedly to get out the message those in control of the Church wanted.

the Whopper
"Faith is a type of intelligence that stems from a persons willingness to submit themselves to the will of God - put themselves second."
A type of intelligence? A major redefinition of the word for sure and it comes with the added benefit of insulting everyone who is not "intelligent" because they are not like you.

then a double scoop of Offensive
"Non-believers refuse to accept God because they don't want Him telling them how to live."
Stay on that ignorant and insulting side because that really helps your argument. Since we believe. that religion was made up by people, we don't want YOU to tell us how to live. I'll take my judgment, over yours, EVERY single time.

and finally the Predictable
"Homosexuality was just the beginning of this PC scientist blitz."
Interesting how people through history have been able to back up their bigotry not with a rational argument for their position but with a magic book that gives them the only right to not need an rational argument. In other words, when I have no evidence and no argument, use the letters PC and with no rational basis try to get people to ignore those who actually know more than you will ever know on the subject because they study it every day.

In the middle, you did the whole “Glory be he was murdered for me” stuff and if you give a moment's thought to all that that represents - the fact that the one making the rules could easily have made it not necessary or the fact that it was basically just stone-age scapegoating to a new more despicable level. If it were true, I would reject it. I wouldn't want ANYONE to kill their child to give me anything including eternal life. I think it is just a detestable thought. It is the definition of evil, and if there were such a god, they certainly would not be someone I would want to spend a minute with, let alone an eternity.

To make heaven even less desirable, if they are correct, those most commonly associated with Conservative Christianity would be there and if you think spending an eternity with those folks is appealing --- You REALLY need to check your thinking.
