Re: “It's official: German studies program at UALR kaput

Perplexed your right about the lose of the program. But apparently everyone hates the only teacher (who is doing a good job) and thinks the major isn't worth anything. Wagner was keeping the major alive. It would have died way before this without her. and now it's gone. Besides the RatemyProf students are not majors. I know many of the majors and they were just fine before this ordeal. The program dying is unfair to all students, not just majors and now they are on their own.

Re: “It's official: German studies program at UALR kaput

I am not trying to start anything big. But as a student I hear the same thing that the RatemyProf students said. And yes Wagner sometimes was bitter, but the students complain about their grades when they also don't come to class, don't ask questions about the material, don't do their homework, etc. Wagner tries to get the students to at least do something instead of come to class and get an A. She wants them to care about the material. Also Wagner is a Cologne born native German, she grew up with real/better schools than ours and taught at a really good boarding school in the US. She has a standard, as the common man says, for her students. So when students don't do anything close to her standard she gets disappointed. I asked questions when I didn't understand, came to class, did my homework, etc and I passed. Besides I have a college professor as a father, and he doesn't get good reviews either and changes his teaching style because of the comments, but some students just don't want to learn and clearly those students grew up to decide the fate of our schools.

"Rate my Prof" can be nice but when the total statistic is 5...not a real source. She had way more students than 5. And I have been in class with those kind of students on Rate my Prof, they don't pass many classes.

I agree with Poppinse. I am also a student of Dr. Wagner and she is very good. She wants students to learn if that means actually doing your homework and not sleeping like in high school language class than so be it. I had a full schedule and I did just fine in her classes. The program itself is very useful and fun, even if German isn't as popular as Spanish, a student has the right to try and learn it. And I have seen other language departments from other schools get the axe and the majors are not taken care of. They are left out in the rain with only a "hopefully you can take this somewhere else and finish". Dr. Wagner is a great teacher and should still have a job and not be thrown away like she currently is.
