Re: “Rep. Warwick Sabin pushes earned income tax credit; Sen. Jake Files backs 5-year sunset for tax exemptions

While the EITC is a fine idea, what about making our tax system as a whole more fair?

We need to end sales taxes on groceries on the local level which can be up to 4% plus the remaining state sales tax still on groceries.

Turnback funding is a fraction of what it was decades ago thanks to no increases for inflation. Local governments resorted to more and more sales tax increases to make up for the loss. Meanwhile the state claimed the money as a surplus. Local governments would be receiving 4 times as much money in turnback funds if it had been increased with inflation. This would allow a reduction in sales taxes or a lower cap on local sales tax rates.

Many poor and/or rural areas of the state must have as high as 11% sales tax rates due to their lack of tax/economic base and lack of state revenue sharing. Out of all the cities in the US (including NYC, LA, SF etc), Arkansas cities have some of the highest sales tax rates in the nation. This is destroying rural/poor parts of the state and placing an unfair burden on those living there.

We need a comprehensive plan to make taxes more fair. Even if it means increasing the state sales tax by 1% so poor and rural areas could reduce their rates by 2%-3%. We also need to look at increasing property taxes especially on luxury goods and huge homes.

Re: “Insurance marketplace director departs

It's amazing that HealthCare.gov applications eligible for Medicaid are either not making it to the state (HealthCare.gov says they are), or Arkansas is simply ignoring them. And yes, I have proof if anyone cares. I have a recording of a state employee saying you can't even apply via Healthcare.gov and was told to contact the Attorney General's office if I didn't like his answer.

Re: “Mayor on I-30: Don't hurt the flowering of downtown

Just extend I-630 to north of the airport and then cross the river and connect with I-40. That would help with getting to the airport, provide an alternative route and open more area for development. Then divert I-30 to the extended 630 route and make the old I-30 crossing into a boulevard type road as Max Brantley and others have suggested.

Re: “The Arkansas Medicaid scandal: the state is purging the rolls of tens of thousands of eligible beneficiaries

Sounds to me as if the state is actually breaking the law. Is that not the case?

Re: “Rally round, designers for a new Little Rock flag

create wide blue winding strip to represent the river, then have 6 curved strips going over that to represent the 6 bridges. A little dot could be added to represent the little rock. The LR side of the river (winding blue strip) could be green and NLR side left white

Re: “Missing in Arkansas law change, explicit protection

SB202 (Act 137) is clearly unconstitutional and other such laws have been ruled unconstitutional already. It needs to be challenged in the courts immediately.

The people need to put forth a constitutional amendment that bans unfair discrimination against everyone.
