Where did you get that nonsense? Most of the people in the local militias did own their own firearms. The few that did not used borrowed weapons or ones provided to them by the commanders. The American Indians were never absorbed into local culture and wild game was/is still available.

Your concept of the militia is also wrong. Every able bodied man in the US is considered to be a part of the US militia. National Guard units are controlled by the states, not the Federal Government.
