Colin, I accept that IFR is one possible way forward to meet the coming electricity demands but not that it is the only way. Both reactor technologies are past the first proof of concept phase but well short of being developed enough to understand their full economics. If coal is cheaper than nuclear then the vast majority of the world will choose coal - with all its downsides. Both LFTR and IFR should be funded through first of a kind full scale reactors so we can get a good handle on the cost and thoroughly vet the safety issues. I believe LFTR will come out lower cost and safer than IFR.
Breeding (producing more fissile than you consume) is not a critical capability so long as we can achieve iso-breeding (producing just as much fissile as you consume).
