Re: “The Oxford American vs. Garden & Gun

Hey there, Lindsey. Hope you are well. I faithfully follow your work with the ARKANSAS TIMES, which I think is very lively these days.

Re: My comment on online reading.

Whether due to being taken out of context or because I expressed myself poorly (or a combination thereof), a couple of blogs have used my “I don’t like to read serious stuff online” comment as proof of a superior or condescending attitude on my part.

For the record, I was addressing a question about whether print magazines have a future or not; not whether online reading does.

My main point (which I could have expressed better) is that SOME people (read: grumpy Old School old people like me) do not enjoy reading long, ambitious writing online—that when we come to such pieces online we print them out rather than read them on our screens.

That may still be an offensive attitude to some—but I don’t think I am the only one who only enjoys reading SHORT items online. In fact, I’m confident that I fit squarely (pun intended) into a marketable, pro-print niche.

I actually addressed the same question today on the NEA’s blog ( Though I added a few more nuances to my argument, my view is still atavistic—but it’s a personal view and one that I have to stand by because it works for me. I don’t pretend to speak for any group other than any niche of print-fetishists.

I also prefer vinyl to downloads—but, again, that’s just me and a smattering of others.
