Re: “Jan Morgan watch

I am reminded of the Hunter Thompson quote:
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."

Re: “Tales of sexual harassment in Congress

It's ironic that this story appears on the same page with a posted article whose headline is "UA to be site of world-record strip attempt".
Sexism is such an ingrained part of our society that even well-meaning allies will use the fake promise of female nudity to sell ANYTHING, including an Arkansas Times article.
WE ARE DONE PUTTING UP WITH THIS BS. GET AN EFFING CLUE.

Re: “UA to be site of world-record strip attempt

First, in our current national climate of women being DONE with misogyny and sexist BS everywhere, what fool thought it was a good idea to use a deliberately misleading, salacious headline?
Next, the bait and switch concludes with a separate statement noting that the person attempting to set this pointless record will be clothed. So YOU, headline writing idiot, knew exactly what you were doing.
My grandfather noted on relevant occasions that sometimes you can only teach a mule with a 2x4 upside the head. Will the Times continue this mulish foolishness?
Clearly you need to hire more women. We will call you out EVERY TIME on this-STOP IT.

Re: “Sex on campus

Once again commentators blame the victim. Social scientists, of whom I am one, regularly find that rape is under-reported for just this sort of reason. Women are not believed, women are blamed, women are ridiculed. Mr. Lyons reports smugly from his patriarchal bubble that it's just a tempest in a teapot, these drunk girls who change their minds should be ignored. He's found a fellow traveler establishment female writer who says it's all blown out of proportion, so the confirmation-biased boys' clubbers can tut-tut and light another cigar with their whiskey.
The preponderance of evidence shows that campus sexual predation is not only NOT blown out of proportion, is is UNDER-reported, it is covered up, and the predators are protected far more often than the victims.
Lyons might as well have said "Look, I'm not a racist, but..."
It's the same sort of patriarchal apologist meme.
"Boys will be boys"
"These young men are otherwise fine fellows. Let's don't ruin their lives, or even hurt their feelings over this 'mistake'. What was she wearing? She got drunk, do you say? Oh, well, we know how that goes-it's all just a misunderstanding."
Gene has no idea what it's like to be black, so he'd be ludicrously out of line trying to write from that perspective. He also has no idea what it's like to be a woman on campus, or on the street, or in a corporate boardroom, or anywhere else, and the CONSTANT, DAILY load of crap we put up with from privileged, entitled white males such as himself.
Next he'll be assuring us this whole women's rights thing is a monthly phenomenon-you guys just give it a little while and they'll settle down when the hormones get back to normal, whatever THAT is with these cockamamie women.
Disappointing, and all too unsurprising.

Re: “Bill Clinton to speak at Central High 60th anniversary ceremony on Sept. 25

I wonder why hate-addled sex-obsessed perverts can't get over the smut peddled by the GOP and try to become decent contributing members of society?

Re: “Arkansas Democrats' rocky road forward

Another thing the DPA and the DPPC (Pulaski County) might look at is making it easier for progressives and other interested parties to actually participate. The current fee, if I am correctly informed, is $50.00 to join the party. While that may seem like a pittance to residents of the Heights and Chenal, it is the difference between utility bills, rent, food, gasoline, and medicine to the people who make difficult economic decisions every day-the very people that the party should be welcoming into the political process. I have heard too many people complain of the elitist nature of the Democratic party, and a reasonable fee of perhaps $20.00, with discounts for seniors and students, would go a long way towards showing a new move towards inclusiveness, or perhaps I should say a dawning awareness of their actual constituents, for the party.
