Re: “Tom Cotton suggests link between Social Security benefits and drug addiction

I'm no Tom Cotton fan at all, but I read the actual proposed legislation (his Senate version plus the House version). If it were toned down to simply add SSA dedicated staff to conduct scheduled reviews of continued eligibility, plus provided return to work incentives (i.e., don't formulaically cut off benefits for someone attempting self-employment or part time employment), it could actually make some sense.

But it goes far beyond that, such as setting cookie cutter deadlines for cutting off disabled individual' benefits because they haven't returned to work yet (making no allowance for individual medical circumstances). It also cuts off the benefits of legitimately permanently disabled people and forces them to reapply. That's the cruel side of it that needs to be excised from the proposals. It's also the unnecessarily costly side, because staff would have to be paid to process hundreds of thousands of re-applications that there was no good reason to force people to make in the first place.

So... if the humane side of the proposal is used and the inhumane side is jettisoned - and if he'll stop automatically equating disabled people with drug addicts - something constructive could come of this.
