A contemporary Washington Post article, which I am unable to link, indicates that he lied to his mama about kicking the victim. Mama was reportedly at the rally, too.

When I lived in Charlottesville, I would sometimes sit in front of Lee's statue (in front of the county courthouse) and double check that all documents had been delivered and all research questions answered before heading back to work. (God forbid that my boss should shell out for downtown office space like other lawyers.) There was a handy bench in front of the statue and you could look up Traveller's nose. I was always grateful that that bench did not force a sitter to look up the horse's butt. I am happy that I missed Mr. Armentrout's performance as a living horse's ass.
