Re: “Former Pulaski Tech board chair questions UA merger

To be clear: PTC is not considering a merge with the University of Arkansas. PTC is considering becoming one of many two-year institutions in the University of Arkansas SYSTEM. Yes, they are two different things.

Based on this fact, many of the points made in this letter are moot. For example:

The University of Arkansas does not need a Technical department on its organizational chart because it does not offer Technical programs. However, two-year colleges in the University of Arkansas SYSTEM do offer technical programs, just like PTC's.

No, PTC's mission statement does not align with the University of Arkansas's mission statement--and it shouldn't! They are two distinct institutions with two different ways of serving the educational needs of the state of Arkansas. Both institutions should (and probably will) continue to have unique missions if PTC becomes a part of the University of Arkansas SYSTEM.

John Barnes is correct on one thing, however. PTC is facing many challenges in this new age of higher education, including declining enrollment. It seems that becoming a part of the University of Arkansas SYSTEM is the administration's way of getting "creative and com[ing] up with the solution" to continue PTC’s mission.
