Re: “The two faces of Mike Huckabee

Thank you for that, Leslie. I was pretty surprised when I saw the headline. I've given up pointing it out to people--they just don't care, most of the time.

Re: “Suffer the renters

$22,000?? Ha. That seems like there should be some sort of penalty. I mean, that landlord obviously wasn't able to get that tenant out--surely that "the amount given by the owner is assumed to be correct" thing couldn't be that out of whack? No, we shouldn't have debtor prisons, no, renters should not be subjugated to the whims of their landlords, but ye gods... That's a lot of money! Maybe they are using that case because it is so striking.

One time I was gone from my apartment for three days and came back to find that the power had been off the whole time. In July. My boyfriend had to empty out the fridge. I just couldn't! I got out of the lease--it was what they called a case of "constructive eviction." They had not paid the electric bill and it made the dwelling uninhabitable. I felt protected, so I was surprised to hear about these eviction problems.

I sure would like to know why the owner of the house next to mine wouldn't kick out the tenants who were running a verifiable crack house. We BEGGED her to do whatever she could, and we were still subjected to months and months of fear and aggravation.

Re: “Arkansas's new day; a historic Republican victory

How easy will it be for them to quickly undo the private option? We were hanging on for a bit in some ways, but this tsunami of unreasonableness just won't stop. I've been putting on a brave face, but this could be very bad for us. I am waiting to see what happens in the next few weeks. There was a chilling moment when I thought Sec'y Clinton might not even choose to run, the outlook is so bleak. I hope that's not the case. I'm hoping they screw it up enough to negate their now huge advantage.

Re: “What didn't get said when Dallas Cowboys exec Charlotte Anderson spoke in LR yesterday

Do something "impactful" and don't say "impactful". Hey, I'm sure that if it were a real, important word, like Viagra, it would be in spellcheck. :))

I don't need to comment on that mess in the article. I mean...

Re: “Michelle Duggar and the Family Council try to torpedo Fayetteville non-discrimination ordinance with lies

You know what I have wondered is how did that kid GET that job? He was selling used cars in NW AR and now I thought what I heard was that he is a spokesman or similar for the FRC in DC. Doesn't add up, unless you take into account his renown.

Duggar does not understand the issue. Clearly.

Re: “The end of 5 a.m. clubs in Little Rock?

If they really want to develop Little Rock further, we have to have late night bars/food. I talk to a fair number of visitors from out of town, and they are really starting to appreciate what's being done downtown. I mean it's really picking up steam, even over just 2 years ago. BUT people from California and bigger cities *expect* to be able to go out LATE. It's bad enough that the restaurants close at 10:00, though really during the week staying open later is just unsustainable now. But don't keep us a small town! Let's build on what we have.

I saw on the LittleRock5am Facebook page (devoted to keeping the bars open) that the late night bars generate $600,000 in tax revenue for the state. How is that bad?? There was also some nonsense about making everyone close at 2:00 creating an "even playing field." It's not even if these guys make 70% of their income after the other bars close. This is a niche--an important one!

My mother always said you can get in as much trouble at 8:00 as you can at midnight... Show us the numbers--are there more people at 4:00 driving around drunk than there are at 2:00 when the other bars let out? I bet not! For most people, 2:00 is late enough. But for certain people--restaurant/bar workers and regular old night owls--the 5 am option is needed!! I just don't see what it hurts, and I DO see distinct downsides to changing this situation.

Re: “Silvek's European Bakery is a sweet surprise inside a grocery store

Low-end store?? It's the nicest Kroger in this part of town. I just can't imagine what someone might find lacking there! Go down to Markham and Rodney Parham if you want to see low-end. Even the store in Hillcrest pales a bit in comparison. (Too small and they carry far fewer items)
