  • Don't give up on LRSD

I hate it. I hate that the Arkansas Board of Education took control of the Little Rock School District. I hate that the board ignored the broad-based community support for the LRSD, including the incredibly powerful voices of student leaders. I hate that the takeover will overshadow the great schools, educators and programs in the LRSD. I hate that families of means will see the LRSD as a failure and move their kids to private schools and move from Little Rock as quickly as they can.

  • Landlord-tenant laws need change

Overshadowed by the "AsaCare" speech was a decision by a circuit court judge in Little Rock that also promotes fundamental fairness. Judge Herb Wright shot down the 1901 Arkansas statute criminalizing a tenant's "failure to vacate" a landlord's property without paying rent.

Re: “House votes to move school board elections

The law requires that school districts must pay for the cost of the election. Regardless of when it is held, the districts will have to pay for the election.

Re: “Little Rock school tax? No deal.

The U of A Cooperative Extension Service has a very good fact sheet of pro and con. See the URL above and read.

Re: “Arkansas Supreme Court splits with bar on lawyer ceremony

My father-in-law, a plaintiff's attorney who practiced law in Texas for many years, opposed judicial appointment, saying that elections were sometimes the only way to get rid of a bad judge. Any appointment system must have some way to remove judges who fail to perform their duties. It must also have protections to prevent discriminatory attacks. There are several systems in place for selection and appointment, producing capable candidates. There needs to also be something for removal, when that becomes appropriate.

Re: “Another local voice angered by Hutchinson administration ouster of school leader

"The state Board of Education has never made public a clear plan to improve education for those students who are struggling." AMEN

Re: “The war on Little Rock schools

I was struck while listening to the video by Poore that he stated he had been offered the job two weeks earlier. For two weeks, Key and Hutchinson had planned this change and yet they made no effort to inform the public or Baker Kurrus or any of the elected representatives of the Little Rock area. I am so angry with this usurpation of the people's right to have a voice in government. Public schools belong to us, not to the Department of Education or the appointed (not elected) Board of Education. Every citizen of the state should protest this unwarranted exercise in fascism by the very politicos who claim to be opposed to authoritarian big government. Well meaning people can work together on issues but there must be trust. Where was trust in Commissioners Key's action?

Re: “Arrest warrant issued for Judge Wade Naramore in connection with son's death: UPDATE

I did a brief search and the number of injuries and death to children riding in front seems to be greater than the deaths of children from over heating. How about car seat alarms that call your cell phone when a child is left and the car is turned off? Something can be done technically to prevent this. How about the 'punishment' is $ contribution to research.
