Re: “Little Rock South Main St. bike lanes coming soon

I know we live in a car dominated culture. But there are more and more cyclists in LR/NLR. Most drivers don't like to get behind a cyclist. It slows them down. As more people ride their bikes to work (or where ever) bike lanes can help keep traffic moving. And bike lanes encourage more people to live in the city center. If bike lanes slow down people trying to escape to the suburbs after work so be it.

Re: “Lyon College to add football in 2015

Two bad. Both schools have good developing soccer programs. Lot's of football being played at Arkansas colleges/universities. Last season Lyon nearly broke into the NAIA top 20 in soccer. Hendrix has a rowdy soccer crowd. Fun to watch the students get after the opposing team. Would have liked them to stay primarily as Futbol schools.

Re: “UPDATE: Medicaid, guns, bicycles on the Broadway Bridge

It's hard to find an argument against the value of the investment in the bridges across our our grand river.

For the new Broadway bridge car and truck traffic should be the priority.

But because the growing remarkable nature our bridges why wouldn't we make this new bridge the best experience for all who would use it: cars, trucks, walkers, and cyclists?

This bridge should be designed to last another 100 years. If possible I would love my great grand children to marvel at the beauty and functionality of the bridge and appreciate the vision of those who built it.

Re: “Metroplan releases video on light rail study

I've lived in a city with light rail. I loved it! I lived 7 miles from my work downtown. No traffic. I saved wear and tear on my car. The cost of my car insurance was less. I saved on gas. Still used my car on the weekends. Not having to deal with parking getting in and out of events/games downtown. My company would either pay for a space in the parking deck or pay for a monthly light rail/bus pass. It was great!

It would be hard for some people to give up the freedom of their cars but in general (for me) it was a really stress free experience. I also used it to go to and from the airport. Never had to park my car.

Light rail might seem ambitious for Little Rock but I believe once people tried it they would really like it. Plus it elevates the profile of your city. It doesn't mean you don't try to have the best highway system possible. But we could pay for it I believe light rail would pay all kinds of dividends for Little Rock down the road.

Re: “Open Carry fails in committee

Too many paranoid Barney Fifes, not enough reasonable Andy Taylors. With more than 300 millions guns out there in the U.S. there's are already more guns in this country than people living here.

I grew up enjoying hunting with my grandfather. I don't own a gun now. But I have no problem with limited gun ownership. However for all the 2nd Amendment bluster the amount of guns already out there makes me fell less secure and less free. While I understand open carry proponents believe it would deter crime, to me it would make our society look and feel less secure and more afraid.

Re: “Envision Little Rock, why don't you?

I love it when friends who have never been to Little Rock come in for a visit. They are so surprised at what LR has to offer. Certainly there's still room for improvement but compared to 10-15 years ago our Capital City has added so many remarkable new features for residents and visitors. It's becoming a very livable city.

Re: “Lottery scholarships recommended for big cut

If the Lottery Scholarship continues to decline, so be it. Our family has appreciated the benefit tremendously. My son is benefiting from the scholarship. It was a factor that probably helped keep him going to college in Arkansas instead of a couple out-of-state schools we were considering. And he feels (and his parents) he is getting a good education. Even if the amount of money continues to decline it's been a real help and we are very thankful.
