Re: “The remedial Arkansas history open line

Wasn't Michigan paired with Arkansas as free state and slave state? President Andrew Jackson signed Arkansas's statehood legislation in June 1836 then Michigan in January 1837.

Re: “Harrison lawyer Ken Reeves appointed to Game and Fish Commission

Two black men and one white woman have been Game and Fish commissioners -- Tommy Sproles and James Moore in the 1980s and 1990s, Pat Peacock Stephens in the 1990s. She was appointed to fill out a 15-month unexpired term.

Re: “Forrest City native Cara McCollum wins Miss New Jersey

Wonder if Cara is kin to Bonner McCollum, the Forrest City newspaper fellow.

Re: “Escaping traffic in America: The remotest place in Arkansas

Oneof my favorite remote places is Gray's Spring Picnic Area in the Oxark National Forest north of Ozark and Mulberry. It is on White Mountain Road near the junction with Rag Town Road. You work to get there. I have never seen anyone else at Gray's Spring. You sit and listen to nature, and when all sounds including birds cease, there may be a bear prowling around. But I've never seen a bear there.

Re: “McDaniel presses Exxon on oil spill info

Vanessa has it right. The 22 families who have been displaced are the top priority with town, school, county and state in line behind them. Put critters in there somewhere, but so far a small number of ducks, muskrats and such have turned up oiled. One bullet apparently dodged is oil affecting Lake Conway's fish.

Perhaps McDaniel has jumped into the role of top crisis manager int he absence of strong action by Beebe.

Re: “Tuesday night line: Steel mill advances, judgeships, raw milk, gay rights, oil spill

Don't view this comment as me being a shill for Exxon, but that company in the past few days has repeatedly said the Mayflower mess is its fault, and it will pay. Exxon is paying the displaced families for lodging and meals, but that is minor compared to the compensation that should come for the houses made unlivable.
I was in Mayflower today just gawking around, and it is a dadgum mess. Apparently the nasty stuff was stopped just short of Lake Conway -- literally just a few feet from the shoreline of a cove.

Re: “Exxon Mobil's oil leak report

According to a couple of news reports, one television and one newspaper, at least some of the residents of the little Mayflower subdivision where the pipeline ruptured did not know the dadgum pipeline was there.
