I read Mr. Fulton's comment above and wondered if we might be related. My grandfather was P.C. Carter. As for the lynching, I don't think anyone need be defensive about that atrocious act nor feel the need to justify it by finding other examples of violent or criminal behavior, as some of the comments seem to suggest. Remembering an awful, racist past and the lingering remnants of that society doesn't cause a racial divide. It doesn't stop people from truly respecting each other as equals today. That happens because we act like our grandparents' lives have no impact on our attitudes and views. And of course that isn't true.
