Re: “Nice lunching in Dogtown Cookery

This is a fine, friendly breakfast and lunch spot. Chef Jason Godwin is professionally trained and was pastry sous chef at Arkansas' "most elegant restaurant." But he's also 4th generation dogtowner, and reveres Southern cooking. Check it out. My wife swears by the fried bologna sandwich but it can't be better than their BLT. And the iced red tea!

Re: “Injured man awarded Dogpatch

Ummm... Dogpatch was not the brainchild of Jess Odom, although he arrived pretty quickly. The park was the creation of a Harrison real estate agent named Snow. The park opened in 1968 and made a small profit. The partners argued over what to do with that profit, and Odom stepped in to buy out most of them. Don't wanna take my word for it? Don't trust Wikipedia? Check the old Arkansas Gazette archives... or, look it up in the old news clippings on the walls of the Ozark Cafe @ Jasper.

Re: “Pieday: PCP at Ed & Kay's Restaurant

Does anyone remember the now-gone Jones' Cafe in Pine Bluff? Their version of this combo was lemon cream topped by a thin layer of pecan -- almost a pie-size pecan praline. Think about it: You got creamy & crunchy, tart & sweet, all in 1 bite. Anyone have a recipe or know another source?

Re: “Pieday: Lemon Icebox at Rita's Restaurant

I promise to try out Rita's... now Kat, you or someone else here must remember the now-closed Jones' Cafe in Pine Bluff. Ms. Jones made 1 pie that I've never found anywhere else but would love to find a new source or recipe: What it was, was Lemon Pecan pie. Yep: a graham cracker crust with a fat layer of lemon cream under a thin top crust of pecan praline. Sounds weird but wow! Tart/sweet, creamy/crunchy. Surely someone knows how to recreate that...?

KAT: I remember that pie. Gosh, that's ANOTHER quest!

Re: “Apples to apples

Am late to this string but indulge me, please: We lived in Maine for several years within a mile of a family orchard: fell in love with small Gala apples, delicious out of hand and straight from the tree... Macouns, almost as lovely as Arkansas Blacks... Jonathans and Jonagolds... and some odd old varieties we've not seen since coming back South: Mother Apple, Strawberry, Newtown Pippen (George Washington supposedly ate this variety, even with his wooden teeth), and ... oh, am I drooling??
