There is not a policy solution for EVERY single social problem. It's not the government's job to save us from ourselves.

Re: “UA-Little Rock undertaking study of starting a football team

I guess that the coffers at UALR are overflowing? As was previously stated, only a handful of schools actually operate in the black on athletics. The chances that UALR will be one of them is slim to none. So what is the likely result of adding a UALR football program? A doormat team playing in front of literally dozens in a 50,000 seat stadium, an athletic department hemorrhaging cash, and less money available to hire and retain faculty, improve facilities, and actually educate the students of the University. Can someone please explain to me how this is a good idea?

Re: “Jim Harris: Belk Bowl disaster leaves questions about Hog leadership

So the Board of Trustees looked at THIS TEAM, and decided that taking out a quarter billion in bonds to fund a stadium expansion for the 1% was a worthy use of the public's credit. *facepalm*

Re: “Jay Dickey regrets his legislation to curb gun research

Doc, how is that absurd? If I live in a high crime area, I might be more inclined to go out and buy a gun than if I live in a low crime area. So therefore, rather than having higher gun ownership rates being the cause of increased gun crime in an area, the higher gun ownership rates may be an artifact of higher levels of crime. The same logic applies to states, municipalities, etc. And please don't try to muddy the waters by bringing up cigarettes and lung cancer. That link can be proven directly through the controlled, empirical study of interaction between the substances contained in cigarettes and living cells. Gun violence is a social problem where such definitive methods are not available. At best you can use analyze natural experiments, ie different firearms laws in different jurisdictions, but then you have to deal with the "noise" created by innumerable confounding, uncontrolled variables. This makes any conclusions drawn from such an exercise virtually useless for any policy purpose. Such studies do, however, make a fine rhetorical cudgel.

Re: “Jay Dickey regrets his legislation to curb gun research

"This study suggests that it's really hard to find evidence that where there are more guns, there are less crimes, but you can easily find evidence that where there are a lot more guns, there are a lot more gun crimes," Hemenway told Live Science.

Correlation does not equal causation. It could be an equally valid argument that there are more guns because there are more gun crimes. Interesting info, but it doesn't really do anything to move the conversation forward.

Re: “CORRECTION: Little Rock mayor deserves 'comparable pay'

Clearly the most daunting challenge that our city faces today is the fact that our mayor must scape by on a mere pittance of $160,000 a year. Now that we've solved crime and poverty, have paved our streets in solid gold and have solved the question of that infernal tech park, we can focus on the important things in life! Somebody please help this poor, unfortunate man!

Re: “UPDATE: Bill would abolish Capitol Zoning District Commission

The absurdity of Nate Bell leaves me speechless . . .
