Re: “Kurrus: 'You can't unring a bell' on superintendent firing decision

I attended the meeting last night as well, and heard a lot of well-thought-out and passionate commentary, all of whom supported Baker Kurrus and pushed for change in how the state has been handling the Little Rock takeover.

That's the seems as if community outrage over the handling of our district means absolutely nothing to the State Board and Commissioner Key. The senators and representatives that attended seem well in line with the public point of view (or were too afraid to say otherwise).

Since we can't even help decide the future of our district by voting for a school board, having local representatives in support of our cause changes nothing, and the commissioner and state board of education won't even come to the public forum or listen to their own civic advisory committee...what else is there to do?

Commenting here is the same as in the public viewing last night, shouting in an echo chamber. If we are so many, and they are so few, is there really nothing we can do?

Re: “Jason Rapert contradicts himself in Channel 7 interview. Surprise.

Looking at the concealed carry law in Arkansas, section 5-73-308:

(b) (1) The director may deny a license to carry a concealed handgun if the county
sheriff or chief of police, if applicable, of the applicant's place of residence or the
director or the director's designee submits an affidavit that the applicant has been
or is reasonably likely to be a danger to himself or herself or others or to the
community at large, as demonstrated by past patterns of behavior or participation
in an incident involving unlawful violence or **threats of unlawful violence**, or if the
applicant is under a criminal investigation at the time of applying for a license to
carry a concealed handgun

Re: “State Board of Ed rejects governor's plans to switch to ACT Aspire test

The problem with standardized testing isn't that testing is wrong. I truly see where my student's skills and application of knowledge are when I give them a test, in a way that casual classroom observation cannot. But that's because my students sweat over their tests, study for their tests (hopefully), and take them seriously at the very least.

Whether it's PARCC or ACT Aspire, there's no framework in place (like grades!) for students to be truly motivated to do well. So they don't try. I wouldn't either, in their place. Why bother?

Until tests are all "high stakes" and produce meaningful consequences for students in a timely fashion, this isn't going to work. All its going to do is paint a dismal picture of failure, while there is success happening at our schools.
