Re: “Houston Nutt takes a licking

I grew up with Houston Nutt. I went to school with him from the first through the 12th grade. Houston was always a nice guy. He was not very articulate or very educated up through high school. He improved himself and obviously took speech lessons to overcome very poor speech patterns as a result of growing up around a lot of deaf and partially deaf people. He was a great quarterback and he was an even better basketball player. He had the misfortune of going to the Razorbacks as a player at the end of Frank Broyles tenure as a coach. Broyles replacement was Lou Holtz who wanted a much more mobile quarterback than Houston was and brought his own qb with him when he came to Arkansas. However Houston had the best arm I've ever seen. Houston is a self-made man who worked his way up to coach the Razorbacks by being incredibly successful and I know him to be a man of integrity. It makes me very sad to see all the people who say nasty things about him that I know are not true. I think any team that hired him as the head football coach would be hiring a very good coach. Houston is a very loyal guy and loved the Arkansas Razorbacks. He must have been very hurt in order to decide to leave. I think he made a mistake, but at the time I think he was so upset with his treatment he was not willing to submit to it any longer. Everyone wanted Houston to run a spread offense and throw the ball all over the field with Mitch Mustain. In retrospect, I think he's been proven correct. I think an argument could be made that the backfield with McFadden Jones and Hillis was probably the best backfield college football has ever seen. To throw the ball over the field rather than running it with that kind of backfield would be a crime. I think if another school ever gives Houston a shot as their head coach they will be very pleased with the results. Just asking if his players. Houston, if you're reading this, this is Peter from Charles Street.
