Re: “Committed to achievement

This sounds like a good program and I applaud those who support it. However, why the focus on elite schools? What's wrong with preparing the students for UALR, UCA, UA, Astate, etc.? Also, of the 320 students who have graduated from the program and enrolled in college, how many actually attended all four years and earned a degree? That number would be a key measurement of the program's effectiveness.

Re: “Pay attention

I have attended community meetings about the recent spike in violence in LR, and police as well as black community leaders have cited "fragile families" as a root cause for the entrenched poverty, high crime rate and lack of perspective for the future for so many of its residents. These families more often than not consist of unwed mothers with little education or marketable job skills and little if any support and parenting from the kids' father(s). No "mission-driven organizations" or government-provided programs can make up for the short-comings of the nuclear family. We have fought hard and passionately for marriage equality, but we seem afraid to promote heterosexual marriage and traditional family structures as a way to strengthen families and communities.
