Re: “Different ways to do freeways

Stayed in downtown OKC last weekend. Indeed I-40 is further south than its old location. Quite familiar with the relo of I-30 in downtown FtW. Can the same thing be done in LIT?

If you want to relo I-30 in LIT, where would you put it? Further east? Thus requiring a third freeway bridge over the AR River and a second over the UPac tracks between 440 and downtown?

Further west? Thus requiring a third bridge between 440 and I-430, navigating the considerably more difficult terrain of the Ft. Roots area, and chewing up considerably more expensive right of way (don't even talk about going through Burns Park).

There is a corridor on any street plan that includes something called the Midtown Expressway. Think converting Pike Ave in NLR to freeway, crossing the River at approximately the same location as the railroad bridge that goes under LaHarpe between the Gary Green Office and the Dillards HQ, and then running south parallel with the railroad tracks that are bridged by 630 and run alongside Barton Coliseum. But wasn't that river crossing site examined and rejected when the Broadway bridge rebuild was put together?

How about this? Do what Austin TX did in their downtown: build a second freeway on top of the existing I-30 and make the top deck express with no entrances or exits between the I-40 interchange and the 530/440 interchange. Can't imagine what traffic would be like during that construction project.

But I will say this: viewing all of this as an NLR resident, you folk that live in LR sure seem hidebound and determined to make my visits to your fair city as difficult as you possibly can. Us northsiders just give and give and this is the thanks we get!
