Re: “District 35: Moderate v. wing nut

Thanks, all.

AT folks have been gracious enough to allow me to publish a piece now and then over the years. Maybe I can write a bit more often now.

Re: “What Weiner lacks

Thanks. I appreciate any compliment I get on my writing, which I liken to fly fishing in a gale force wind. I know where I'm trying to go, but I don't usually get there.

Re: “Lawsuit filed over Weiner school merger

I've said about all I need to say on this subject — lest folks put up a blockade to make sure they catch me next time I go see the family — but there is one point I didn't get to in the piece.

Folks in Weiner have worked long and hard over the past few years to stave off the inevitable. They took lots of steps and tried lots of things. The one thing they didn't or couldn't or wouldn't do is acknowledge the inevitable and do more to control their destiny as best they could. They kept fighting this fight that they're gonna lose. Eventually.

What I mean by that is this: Legislators worked out an arrangement that would have consolidated the district with the outstanding Valley View district. It's my understanding that the deal would have allowed Weiner to remain viable for a few years and perhaps even have allowed elementary and junior high students to remain on the Weiner campus. However, at the 11th hour, Weiner patrons nixed the plan, and from then on, legislators from outside the district (rightfully, in my opinion) washed their hands of the matter and agreed to let Weiner fend for itself — which brings us to this weird geographic arrangement with Harrisburg.

And, again, lost in all this legal and goofy wrangling about al-Qaida winning if we shut down tiny school districts is the academic opportunity for the young people.

Re: “What Weiner lacks

Carl,

Thanks.

I left Jonesboro a few years ago to come to Conway because of the cool things the publisher was doing online and with new media and because he told me I'd someday have a chance to be publisher. Three years later ...

I must say that I enjoy this side of the business more because I can shepherd projects from the genesis.

I expect to see the smoke of me being burned in effigy any time now.
