Re: “Harris blames adoption woes on Department of Human Services

Sadly all the elements of a tragedy were already in place when the Harrises chose to add these children to their family. As an adopted person myself and activist for adoption changes, I know MANY adoptees who were abused and one of the most common factors is mixing adopted children with older biological children. Another frequent factor is fundamentalist, patriarchal family religious belief that looks to the Bible for strict discipline and obedience and refuses to seek outside help. Add in the current evangelical push to "save babies for Jesus" and you have all the pieces for this to happen. Unfortunately, our legal system and courts treat children, especially adopted ones, with laws based upon property rights not human rights. We divide children in parental rights termination, adoption, divorce and custody cases based upon what the adults want, not what the child needs. The victims in this case are not the Harrises, it is the three girls going through constant changes in homes at such an early age.
