Re: “LR School Board member blasts colleagues as talk grows of state takeover of schools

My prayers go out to ya'll. pcssd ended each year with millions before the take over. It's been a VERY hard environment to work in. I am speaking as an individual teacher.

Re: “TGIF open line

I can read, write and count and therefore am appreciative of education. Learning was pleasant enough that I spent an additional amount of time going to college. Low and behold, I even became a teacher. It used to be a rewarding and honorable job. But it's 2012. We over the last 30 years or so have watched crooks in government, unethical folks run our life and have had businesses take over and everything has become so commercialized that everything is about the all American Buck. From the Peanuts Christmas story I loved to watch as a child, I remember an important lesson: to remember and appreciate the simple things, be respectful and appreciate the giving that others do.
We've made jokes for years about how little teachers get paid. It went from a joke to an expectation now and they are damned in the press if they want a cost of living raise or to be able to feed their own families. Teachers often get summer jobs to compensate their income. If a teacher is lucky, they are married or have someone they can rely on for trust and assistance. We have to be there for a pat on the back, because people are even raising their children to disrespect teachers. We can be alone and suffer alone, or find others to befriend. I am lucky. I found a group of educators that have had a say in decision making. WAIT, what? superintendents and administration lets me be involved? I don't just take abuse and what scraps are thrown at me? That's how it is when we collaborate. Doctors can pay their own money to belong to an association, hang with those of their own types and learn new skills from each other. It's the American Medical Association. Lawyers have an association, gosh, nearly every group of people. I found the National Education Association, Arkansas Education Association and the Pulaski Association of Classroom Teachers. Sadly, there will always be haters, jealous people and uninformed people that want to blame everything on someone. We are in the public eye, so some are attracted to us like magnets. Hence, this West Little Rock person. These type of individuals are either involved monetarily, to get a cut of the pie if they can destroy something or just enjoy fueling fires. In our district, we aren't blessed with true Christian, kind hearted, caring supervisors in all positions. Some bully, torment, make six figure salaries and refuse to be a part of fixing problems, just keep stirring the pot. Our salaries are public knowledge. You can see how many years it takes to make the salaries and how many years of college credit it takes also. The ones to feel sorry for, are not the teachers or support staff. See, they keep doing their job every single day despite being attacked. They keep on going to work daily and actually spend all day with the students. These tax payers are the ones I feel sorry for. They have no idea how their dollars are being spent. WASTED by those that refuse to follow the law, or binding legal contracts. Our unions allow teachers and support staff to be involved in improving the schools, classrooms, working/learning conditions which are the same, and have a voice to the public from what's actually going on in the classroom; not some building across the county from those that never interact with students. Thanks to PACT/PASS teaching has benefits, makes my job feel respectable and gives me folks to remind me that someone appreciates me. I Thank You PACT, PASS and Robert Austin for trying to educate the public and have them be productive and collaborative.
