Re: “The Voter ID law takes effect; questions raised

Am I reading it wrong, or does 7-5-305(a)(2) not say that is *exactly* what is supposed to happen? Does another part of the statute, or other statute, override that provision?

Re: “Oops. Voter ID advocate Asa Hutchinson forgets Voter ID at polls

RE: Being required to state certain information out loud to the poll worker before being allowed to vote, see A.C.A. § 7-5-305(a)(2):

"Before a person is permitted to vote, the poll worker shall... Request the voter, in the presence of the poll worker, to state his or her address and state his or her date of birth..."

This appears to be present in the statute both before and after the effective date of the new Voter ID provisions.

Re: “Lewis Black messes with Texas

Nowadays, it seems like a lot of Arkansans wish the state was a territorial outpost of Tejas. Enough people certainly go ga-ga over news that some new overbloated Texan restaurant chain is opening a franchise here. I suspect more than a few dream of Little Rock being a northern suburb of Dallas.

Ah, for the days of the Southwest Conference, when hating all things Texan was not only expected -- but your birthright as an Arkansan.

Re: “More Republican resistance to 1st Amendment

"Isn't this the same gasbag that called Bush racist over some brouhaha in Haiti, then when confronted by a Hispanic member of Bush's admin who took exception to her remarks, she said, to the Hispanic, 'You all look alike anyway"." - Steven E

From the article: "Brown then told him ''you all look alike to me,'' the participants said."

Are you implying that, in making the above comment to Assistant Secretary of State Roger Noriega, Brown was saying that all Hispanics look alike?

Because in the context of the article, it reads to me as if she was saying all of the administrative officials who were in attendance at the meeting looked alike.

In either case, what she said was totally inappropriate and there's no defending what she said in any context, but I still think interpreting the context correctly is important.

Re: “KUAR announces midday program changes

From YM's link above:

"The area north of KUAR and between KUAF to the west and KASU to the east includes nearly 300,000 citizens without public radio. PTFP funded a project in 1997 to provide a full power repeater station in Mountain Home, Arkansas, but the project was unable to be completed. This repeater would have brought first service to over 60,000 residents. The terrain is rugged and a channel 6 TV station operated by Arkansas Educational Television is in Mountain View."

Talking about my neck of the woods. Ever since leaving those hills for college and first learning of the mere existence of public radio, I have lamented that no such signal was available to a portion of the state that desperately needs it, more especially since the introduction of 97.1 "Mountain-Talk" Radio, a Mountain Home station that serves as the regional Tea Party mouthpiece.

AETN operates a transmitter tower high on a hill above Mountain View that achieves a fairly good service area -- could we not just stick some sort of repeater for KUAR/KUAF/KASU up there, too?

(To it's credit, on some good days you can pick pu the KASU signal, but it's not consistent)

Re: “Work on River Trail gap starts Monday

In today's world, it seems like no matter how many jail cells you build, the PD/SO will fill them up, and then some.

The other question one might ask is, how can we spend the money so that you can (more) quickly get to a point where you don't need all the jail cells you already have?
