Rotting timber actually releases the carbon stored in the wood. That is why very old stands can actually be carbon emitters as opposed to carbon sinks. Young, fast growing timber captures the most carbon. Some may dislike the pine monoculture represented by pine plantations, but they are the most efficient timber management technique for capturing and storing carbon.
