Re: “No open doors for Oxford House

I live in an Oxford House in Kansas, I have chosen to stay for more than a year now. True, there are issues with ANY house, anywhere...however; the house I live in, and all that I am personally aware of (27) in the city where I live, have to abide by Charter ("in Oxford House parlance") stipulations. We are 100% self supporting...we will not allow ANYONE to stay who uses or drinks and we are not disruptive..within our houses or our neighborhoods or communities and we are law abiding citizens. The success rate for OH residents is this, those who stay the minimum of 18 months have an 85% chance of staying drug and alcohol free. How bout them odds, hmm? The rent we pay is to the house, which all utilities...including cable, internet and telephone, cleaning supplies which includes laundry soap and use of washer and dryer(s) and basic grocery items including toilet paper and paper towels as well as the rent to the landlord is paid out of that fund. Houses vote on new residents after an application and interview for acceptance, which must be at 80%. This is a system which is working and has worked for many MANY years in neighborhoods all over the country and now in other countries. Those houses which do not do these things will not remain open. NO ONE is making a killing off of the residents of OH...and speaking for myself, I have gained a great deal from my experience in OH. I spent just over 2 years in prison and have been out now going on a year and a half...I just celebrated 4 years without the need to use drugs or taste a drink of alcohol. I am employed full time, in fact the rate of unemployment is way less for OH residents than it is for the general public. And I just recently earned my drivers license back and am in the process of buying a vehicle. I don't want to live in OH for the rest of my life, but have no immediate plans to move out. It is a good thing. Oh and we do not allow violent offenders or child predators to live in our houses. To those of you who have spoken ill of addicts and residents of OH should look at their own families...my guess is at least one of those family members would benefit from the OH experience. Peace.
