Re: “An early open line

Before Herbert Hoover became President, he headed up the Commission for Relief in Belgium - post WWI. I quote from page 55-56 in Bill Bryson's One Summer:

Two things accounted for Hoover's glorious reputation: he executed his duties with tireless efficiency and dispatch and he made sure that no one anywhere was ever unaware of his accomplishments....

...Hoover was almost totally lacking in feeling for those he saved. He refused to visit any relief sites or otherwise interact with the unfortunate victims he was helping. Once when an aide innocently took him to a field kitchen in Brussels, Hoover recoiled. "don't you ever let me see one of these again,' he seethed.

Kinda wonder what made me look that up.

Re: “Asa Hutchinson announces run for re-election as governor

Note to tsallenarng: Look up Labor Force Statistics of the Current Population Survey and educate yourself on how unemployment statistics are collected. Quoting one paragraph:
Some people think that to get these figures on unemployment, the government uses the number of people collecting unemployment insurance (UI) benefits under state or federal government programs. But some people are still jobless when their benefits run out, and many more are not eligible at all or delay or never apply for benefits. So, quite clearly, UI information cannot be used as a source for complete information on the number of unemployed.

Re: “North Carolina: No longer a democracy

I always use that phrase "I can't tell you how many people..." when the number is zero.

Re: “The ill effects of tax cuts give rise to Democratic gains in Kansas

Let me tell you how stupid Kansas is: A friend of mine grew up on a Kansas farm but moved to Wisconsin after college. He inherited that farm land and it makes a profit. Kansas cut the income tax for farmers to zero. When this friend reports his farm income to the Wisconsin IRS he can not get credit for payment of Kansas taxes - there aren't any. So naturally, Wisconsin taxes that income. The upshot is that Kansas is sending their tax money to support Wisconsin!

Re: “UPDATE: Arkansas electors vote for Trump amid protests

Doubt that we will get rid of the electoral college, but how about some serious discussion of the definition of a state? I propose that states below a agreed upon minimum be forced to merge with neighboring state. We did it with school districts. Why not states? I suggest breaking up Wyoming and merging the two Dakotas. Then start breaking up states above some agreed upon maximum population: split California, New York, and Texas (oops, not that one). And for God's sake, give Washington DC at least one senator.

Re: “Trump proposes an unconstitutional ban on flag burning, revoking citizenship

Watch it. He just provoked a spate of flag-burning.

Re: “Fidel Castro dead at 90

Could we ask the Democrat-Gazette to please run that picture of Fidel and Vic Snyder one more time?
