I grew up in Charleston and attended the College of Charleston, right around the corner from Arnold's shop, "Octopus's Garden". He had a shop on King St and also one on George St (1973-76ish). He was a different dude. Very distant, aloof, very much a "glad you had the opportunity to visit my my store" attitude. Gay? Never a doubt! Nevertheless, being a Beatles freak myself, I could wade through the condescension and engage him in conversation...I remember him showing me a cigarette butt he said he had taken from a limo that Paul McCartney had used when Arnold was in Nashville with Macca. He kept it in a jar.
I still have several of the bootlegs, "LS Bumblebee", Live at Shea and "Get Back". Sad to hear of his demise. He was truly an interesting part of the Charleston music scene. RIP.
