Re: “A modest proposal for charter schools

The author seems to ignore that the "modest" proposal for an all-charter district actually happened in New Orleans and it's been an enormous success. Student achievement is way up. College enrollment is way up. Students aren't stuck attending a crappy school because their parents can't afford a house in a fancy neighborhood. The all-charter district has accomplished this with expulsion rates lower than state average. Now, of course, there have certainly been costs; The charters destroyed the teachers' union and laid off many black teachers. But if the choice is between permanent employment for weak teachers and improving the lives of black children, I come down on the side of the children every time. Charters would be fine in Bentonville, but their desperately needed in places were students sit in failing schools and can't afford to escape.
