Re: “Humanists rap Beebe mayor for Christian emphasis of July 4 observance

@Ms McWilliams: You must not have read this part...
"The objection was spurred by a letter from the mayor to residents about the event, particularly the portion highlighted above about the appearance of a gospel group, the Bowling Family, whose goal is 'to usher in the presence of god and to celebrate the Christian message.'"

That quote from the mayor is where the whole thing went south. I don't like gospel or bluegrass vocals (the instrumentals are cool); a lot of folks don't like the music I like. It's a festival to celebrate the 4th of July, and this is Arkansas, which probably means some sort of country music. Even gospel music. No one thinks much about it, I suppose. It's just the entertainment.

But the mayor had to try to make it about religion, about Christianity, instead of just letting it be a patriotic, secular event.

Re: “It's looking like a Republican sweep in Arkansas

It's time to go. I thought it was good to stay and fight, but I was wrong. Now, where to go that's blue and affordable. I don't think I'd like Ecuador... too many creepy-crawlies.

Re: “Arkansas's new day; a historic Republican victory

When we came here 10 years ago from Missouri, Arkansas seemed kind of progressive compared to the Show-Me State. That started downhill in 2010. It is done tonight. It seems every single seat went red.

Like Deathbyinches, we're way left of Obama. Not to mention non-religious. And now, we are living in a state that will be run by Tea Party theocrats and neo-cons (take that as conservatives or confederates, as you please). How long until we vie with Mississippi for the bottom of the barrel?

Time to move again. A pain, but it is going to get a lot worse here before it begins to get better. Vermont is looking really good... The most secular state in the country, and they have Senator Sanders. ;o)

Re: “Anti-casino mailing hits boxes UPDATE

Put it on the ballot and let the people decide. The casino issue is just like the "wet" issue. If someone wants to indulge, they will do it, either here or elsewhere. Why should other counties/states get our revenues? For people who gripe about a "nanny state", the Tea Party types sure want a nanny state when it comes to what they regard as "vices".
