Super size me no longer 

Morgan Spurlock's documentary film "Super Size Me" has become a fast-food industry public-relations nightmare. Spurlock ate three meals a day at McDonald's for a month, and, of course, his weight and body-fat percentage soared, his liver became fatty, and he felt awful - after just a month. Not long ago, I was beginning to feel like a middle-aged version of Spurlock. I remember when McDonald's hamburgers were 15 cents and fries were dime, and since then I've contributed mightily to the "more than a gazillion sold." But decades of eating many a meal grabbed at the drive-through left me moving into my late 40s with more than 30 percent body fat, a concern about rising blood pressure, and other health fears. I just didn't feel that good anymore, which is no way to approach life with a 2-year-old running around the house. KATV, Channel 7, sportscaster Steve Sullivan and Powerhouse Gym's Jeff Lawrence came to my rescue. Stanley Knox, Chris Brown and Justin Acri at KABZ-FM, 103.7 The Buzz (where I visit on Friday mornings to talk entertainment with the Morning Buzz crew) gave my name to Sully and Lawrence for their latest KATV/Powerhouse Gym 12-week weight loss challenge. By putting me in their 12-week challenge, Sully and Lawrence have me living right. With three weeks of workouts and drastically altered eating habits (no more mayo on sandwiches and no potatoes, fried foods or cheese), I've dropped almost 10 pounds and a fair portion of body fat. "Challenge" is the key word for me. The team concept was the kind of kick-start I needed to regularly work out again. You can't let your team down; you've got to lose weight, or not only will Lawrence jump your case, but so will four other male team members who don't want to lose to our competition - a team of five women. The first week of the power-circuit and step program, the guys kicked tail. Then we got cocky. We had a bad week, and the fired-up women made up serious ground without having to send us Shipley's donuts. Last week, the guys got back on track. What will the competitors win? Improved self-esteem, a tremendous boost in energy level, and an overall good feeling. Hey - it's not been easy. At first, it was a surefire way to slow time almost to a complete stop: That first minute I spent on the Reebok step platform seemed like it would never end. But today, I've pitched the Pop-Tarts and potatoes, am learning to live without mayo. I find myself inspired: There is a light at the end of this fatty tunnel. If Gov. Mike Huckabee and Jim Harris can do it, you can too, Arkansas. Let's lose our standing as the fattest state in the country with the highest number of strokes and heart disease.
