Re: “God and gays at Harding University

I was a bible major at HU; received my degree in youth ministry. I was appalled then at how the administration and many student leaders were so judgmental of others, and I am more than appalled now after hearing about the current situation. These GBLT students need love and support and do not need your judgments making them feel worse. I know for a fact many students do not have a choice but to go to HU (an by choice, I mean they are not developmentally/emotionally capable of dealing with ostracizing parents, friends, church members, etc. that would result from coming out.) For many, they have struggled with emotions/feelings/attractions since childhood. As a doctor who has studied genetics, there is a strong argument for biology influencing their sexual preference. I am not saying accept their choices. I am saying don't you dare judge them and for crying out loud support them as many of these young people (and I emphasize the word young as adolescence is prolonged so much more today in our society) feel lost, are clinically depressed, and are truly struggling with their own faith and their mortality. If one of these people takes their own life I will be sick. Quit the judgment, the statements of what you do or don't believe, get over yourself and start helping and reaching out... Not to convert, not to influence or sway beliefs. Just LOVE. That's it. Each person's decision is up to them so quit acting like it's your responsibility that these people make the "right" decisions in your opinion. Just worry about yourself. That's all you can do. Love trumps all.
