Horses are livestock, just like cows or chickens or any other farm animal. One of the reasons you see the rise in neglect of horses is because ranchers are no longer able to manage their herds as they could before. The price of horses has tanked and the costs of feeding livestock has skyrocketed. While folks here in the US may not find the idea of eating horse meat appealing, in Europe and Asia, horse meat is still a part of many people's diet. My point is that there is a market, just not here in the US. I think it is better for farmers and ranchers to have the ability to humanely manage their livestock with US approved facilitiesmthan to either ship horses off to Mexico or let the horses starve. Those out there who think horses can be easily adopted out like kittens or puppies are mistaken.
