The week that was Feb. 2-9

IT WAS A GOOD WEEK FOR … DISHONESTY. President Bush came to town to tout his plan to wreck Social Security. The truth wasn’t on the program. GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE. He blasted Sen. Jim Holt’s bill to crack down on illegal immigrants as un-Christian. IT WAS A BAD WEEK FOR … SCHOOL CHILDREN. The House decreed inaccurate textbooks in the name of gay bashing. YOUNG WOMEN. The House decreed that pregnant teens, even those raped by their father, must get written parental consent for an abortion, unless they can figure out how to find a judge who’ll waive the rule. GAY PEOPLE. The House decreed that they are unfit to be adoptive or foster parents. ARKANSAS. The House demonstrated the legislature’s top priorities — mixing government with religion and homophobia. And don’t forget soothing the special interests. Deltic Timber’s bill to seize control of watershed protection from the water utility passed the Senate. PANHANDLERS. Little Rock officials announced undercover cops will be busting panhandlers for begging. THE UA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION. It claims it won’t be influenced by money from conservative sources in its new “education reform” mission. Right. It held a conference in Little Rock last week dominated by conservative Hoover Foundation types and other proponents of charter schools, etc. HOG BASKETBALL. An NCAA berth? Forget about it.

The Observer spends a lot of time observing the river these days, ensconced as we are most days in a satellite Observatory with a lovely balcony full of deck chairs overlooking a lovely stretch of the Arkansas a half-mile downstream from the red scar of Big Rock Quarry, which used to just be Big Rock before some damn fools turned the whole thing into gravel at some point in the past century.
