The week that was Feb. 21-27, 2007

It was a good week for …

The LITTLE ROCK SCHOOL DISTRICT. Federal Judge Bill Wilson released the district from court supervision of its desegregation effort. The practical impact is small, but many believe the psychic impact is large.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Is it possible that the legislature has generally responded sufficiently to Supreme Court rulings on equity and adequacy and financing of the state’s schools?

PORK. Both the House and Senate continued to desperately scheme to come up with a constitutional way to funnel money to hometown projects that lawmakers can claim as their own.

MISSISSIPPI. Tupelo came from nowhere to land a new Toyota assembly plant that many thought might come to Marion, Ark. Lower wages and cleaner air were among the reasons mentioned in early speculation about the decision.

PULASKI COUNTY CLERK PAT O’BRIEN. He declared he’d finished the cleanup of the disastrously maintained voter rolls he inherited two years ago and will seek release from federal supervision.

It was a bad week for …

DUMAS. A tornado smashed the town last Saturday, inflicting huge property damage and dozens of injuries.

TOMMY ROBINSON. The former sheriff and congressman and his lawyer, former Sen. Bill Lewellen, were jailed for contempt of bankruptcy court — mainly throwing up meritless obstacles to sale of Robinson’s assets to satisfy debts.

The NORTH LITTLE ROCK POLICE. Oops. They returned a missing car to a North Little Rock woman without failing to first discover her husband’s dead body in the trunk.

STAN HEATH. Guaranteed another losing season in the SEC, the Razorback men’s basketball coach is apparently to be fired if he doesn’t make the NCAA tournament. Long shot, that.

Trying to compare Donald Trump's reaction to the Russia investigation with Bill Clinton's dealings with Kenneth Starr should be a non-starter if the facts mattered. But these days — and to the New York Times — it ain't necessarily so.
