Re: “If you read anything today, try this on China and immigration and Donald Trump

It's exasperating: a certain brand of liberals has nothing better to oppose to Trump and his fantasies and myths than ... fantasies and myths. The demographic myth peddled in the Atlantic article is anachronistic (this is how kings thought of population matters in the 17th century: I need more soldiers and laborers than my rival kings) and totally bizarre in today's modern, highly automated industrial economy. The most successful countries with the highest living standards are ones that have low fertility. High fertility societies are poor, unstable, backwards. Neither China nor Japan nor America have a labor shortage now or in the foreseeable future. To the contrary, unemployment and underemployment are and will continue to be high globally. America's labor participation rate has declined some 10 percentage points in the last decade. Millions are underemployed while those who have work are overworked and don't even have a single day of legally guaranteed vacation time.

"Trends suggest China, which is 4.5 times the U.S. in population, may in time be only about twice the size of the U.S. The U.S. workforce is growing while China's shrinks."

So what? You still won't catch up with China. If you need big numbers to feel important, I pity you.

Re: “An official state book: Can Arkansas top Tennessee?

Die Regulatoren in Arkansas, by Friedrich Gerst├Ącker (…).

Probably the first book to ever mention the state of Arkansas by name.

Re: “Jury finds for city of Little Rock in discrimination complaint by employee

plainjim: paying a lawyer for a discrimination lawsuit would have bankrupted anybody who isn't rich. And also, only an asshole would ridicule somebody for seeking justice.

Re: “University of Arkansas adds to "border state" tutition break program

Of course, if a majority of freshmen is from out of state, then over time a majority of all students will be from out of state. The breakneck enrollment increase over the last 20 years has brought tons of fresh money to the UA, allowed the hiring of new faculty, but it has not noticeably benefited Arkansas students. Of course, the UA must operate within the budget allotted by the state.

Re: “University of Arkansas adds to "border state" tutition break program

Max, the enrollment was already above 26,000 last year.

There must be a mistake in the UA press release. They report a freshman class of 4,916 but last year's was already 5,959. (…)

Re out of state students: Last year, 58.4% of all students were Ark residents. If that number has fallen to 54%, that is quite a change. If the 54% figure is correct, then the number of in state students would have declined almost by a thousand and would be lower than it was in 2010.

They may say that no qualified Arkansas student is turned away in favor of out of state students but the fact is that the number of Arkansas students is in decline despite demographic trends to the contrary.

Re: “UA reports 2 percent enrollment increase

The freshman number - 4,916 students - can't be right because last year's freshman class was 5,959 (…)

The 2% enrollment increase is the smallest since 2006 and the third smallest since 2000.

Re: “The Medicaid mess: More than 25,000 beneficiaries (including ARKids children and the medically frail) still don't have coverage for medication

Hutchinson is a disgrace - a corrupt, incompetent sadist who is not fit for higher office - not fit for any office.
