TV highlights March 3-9

FOUNDING MOTHERS 6 p.m. Sunday, March 6 The History Channel (Comcast Ch. 70) ?Though there surely were women around in 1776, the lack of female faces on our coins and bills might make you think that there was a shortage of womanly fortitude back when the country was young — or at least a shortage of men willing to note the accomplishments of women for the record. However, as this special shows, women played an important role in the founding of America and the winning of independence from Britain — and we’re not just talking about bringing tea to the boys. As recent historical scholarship has shown, some women were important behind-the-scenes counselors to their founding father husbands. Others — like Deborah Sampson — took a more proactive role, dressing up like men and actually fighting in the Continental Army. UNDERGROUND ARKANSAS 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 9 AETN (Comcast Ch. 3, Broadcast Ch. 2) ?Far from the general idea of dank holes in the earth, Arkansas’s limestone bedrock caves have their own special brand of serene wonder: rivers, streams, and strikingly beautiful, near-sensual formations of stone that took eons of dripping water to create. Though not for those afraid of the dark (or claustrophobics, or those scared of bats or creepy crawlies), they are definitely worth a look. Here, AETN takes viewers on a tour of some of our most pristine subterranean tourist attractions, including Devil’s Den and Blanchard Springs caverns. BUILD OR BUST 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 9 Speed Channel (Comcast Ch. 46) ?For any fan of high-octane shows like Discovery Channel’s “American Chopper” and “Motorcycle Mania,” it’s an idea straight out of their dreams: Get 30 days, all the parts you need, and the use of a world-class custom motorcycle builder’s shop to build a one-of-a-kind chopper from the ground up. If you succeed, you get the bike. If you fail, you slink home in disgrace. Seeking a piece of the red-hot gearhead reality-show pie, that’s just the opportunity Speed Channel is offering with this new series. Each week, a different rookie builder is given his or her shot at the big time, not to mention the guidance of a seasoned vet from the world of custom motorcycles (and, as many who have fallen into the “bust” category can attest to, it’s not as easy as it looks on television).
