DO THE TWIST: Arena football at Alltel.

After a 2-1 start, including a “two-fer” sweep in Texas the past two weeks, the Arkansas Twisters Arena Football 2 League team plays its first home game of the season in Alltel Arena on Saturday, April 28, against Corpus Christi.

Kickoff is 7:05 p.m. Ticket prices range from $10 to $23.

The football excitement kicks off with the Twisters’ tailgate party from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. outside the arena. “Freaky” Joe Franklin of 103.7 “The Buzz” will be emceeing the event, and fans can enjoy free hot dogs and $2 beers, plus meet the Sirens dance team and Radar, the mascot.

Holden sings ‘Winterreise’

Baritone Robert Holden, a favorite among Wildwood Park opera patrons, will perform Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise” in the final Salon Series concert on Friday, April 27, at the Wildwood Cabaret Theatre.

Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $35.

Holden has sung opera, oratorio and recitals throughout the United States and Europe for the past 21 years, performing with such groups as the Philadelphia Orchestra, Denver Symphony and Arkansas Symphony. His repertoire ranges from Bach and Handel to such current composers as Copland, Brittan, Bird and Bolcom.

Pianist Stratsimir Pavlov will be joining Holden on Friday.

Wines galore at Cowie

Amateur winemakers will have a chance to show off their work at the 23rd annual Cowie International Amateur Wine Competition on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, in Paris. The awards dinner scheduled for Saturday will benefit the Historic Arkansas Wine Museum.

The event will be held at the Cowie Wine Cellars, 101 N. Carbon City Road, (off state Highway 22) in Paris. The best in show winner will receive a gold coin.

The event kicks off with a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Cowie Wine Cellars. Admission is a food dish.

A home wine-making seminar is scheduled for noon Saturday, followed by a public tasting of the winning entries. Tickets are $15. Winners will be announced at the benefit dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Paris Community Center, 25 E. Main St. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

The Historic Arkansas Wine Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the historic information and artifacts of the wine making tradition in Arkansas. The museum has locations in Carbon City and downtown Hot Springs.

Warming Arctic blast

The Arctic Voices Global Warming Tour will visit Little Rock this weekend, bringing speakers to the Clinton School of Public Service at 3 p.m. Saturday and Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church at 9:15 a.m. Sunday School classes.

Speakers are Olav Mathis Eira, a member of the Nordic Saami Council executive board, and Sarah James, a Neetsaii Gwich’in Indian who lives in Arctic Village, Alaska. They will address the affect of climate change on their traditional cultures.
