This thread may be dead but I just stumbled on this and I feel the need to throw in my two bits... Your concept of American history is quite delusional... non-college level textbooks I suppose are "popular history", which is often vague and avoids important details which lead people to make assumptions that are incorrect. In your description of Lee you are anachronistic. In this time period northerners were no less racist than southerners and were no more supportive of freed slaves after the war. Of course, you probably think the war was strictly fought over slavery, which I guarantee you was not the top concern for most involved. Very few southerners actually owned slaves - that was mostly left to the elite. In any case, my point is if you want to talk shit about someone in history you should at least try to understand it from their point of view first and actually check your facts.
