Re: “First the Blueway: Now the Common Core school standards

Yeah, the in-state variance caused by vague standards isn't much of an argument. The state makes clear how their standards are assessed and explicitly states, in precise language, the performance level descriptors for every standard. And even if there existed a significant level of ambiguity in Arkansas's standards, the common core standards are no more precise in their language.

Re: “First the Blueway: Now the Common Core school standards

The difference between states won't be a surprise. We already have NAEP scores to tell us how states fare against each other. Does Tom Kimbrell really think the only thing separating Arkansas schools from Massachusetts schools are academic standards? Why all the schools in Arkansas have worked under the same standards for years, and they're all clearly equally accomplished, right?

Re: “First the Blueway: Now the Common Core school standards

Putting all this Tea Party nonsense aside, there are some very legitimate concerns about the Common Core standards. This includes questions of developmental appropriateness of their fluency requirements in early childhood mathematics and the many gaps in the development of math topics from grades 5-7. And these standards have not been successfully implemented in any state -- they are totally untested. But the real concerns revolve around the common tests being developed (Arkansas is part of the PARCC consortium). These tests are designed to be administered via online computing, and there are real concerns over whether many schools can get the required infrastructure to successfully deliver the tests. This includes hardware and increased bandwidth. Ever see a server crash on room full of test-taking 4th graders? It's not pretty. And even though PARCC is giving schools one year of paper-and-pencil tests as a buffer, many think the one year isn't enough.

There are other angles, too. It's not the textbook business that's driving this. It's the monied interests in the school business that are really interested in a consolidated national market where models are easily scaled up without having to jump through 50 different sets of hurdles. I mean, it's no coincidence that charter school pushers are big backers of the common core standards. Just wait for 2016 when the results of the first assessment come out and there is a big dip in scores. Even though there is always a dip in scores when a new state test is rolled out, Jeb Bush will say this is more "proof" that the system is failing.

Re: “Walton-funded group has early word on state Board of Education appointment

Diane is from Melbourne, too. And she is replacing another Melbourne resident. It's apparently important to keep this town of 1,700 people adequately represented on the Board of Education.
