Re: “Jeff Long's firing letter to Bobby Petrino

Anyone in higher education should be able to construct sentences in their native language.

The U of A does not hyphenate vice chancellor. I should have known that was wrong. Good catch.

Re: “Jeff Long's firing letter to Bobby Petrino

OMG-The letter from the VICE CHANCELLOR of THE University to Bobby Petrino has so many grammatical errors, I actually lost count. The highlight was a fragmented or incomplete sentence. (It had no verb.) When I was in school that was an automatic F with required rewrite. There were so many errors it made the letter hard to read. This boggles the mind. If the VICE CHANCELLOR has basically no command of English composition, what must the students and faculty think? Did someone else write this for him?

I noticed the same mangling of the English language during his latest news conference, but attributed it to nerves, and his failure to read all the words on the page. Now I realize, they were never there.

Just to be clear, this is not literacy.

Re: “Sam Laser dies at 90

I served on a jury where he represented an insurance company; I think it was a slip and fall. The opposing attorney made it all about Sam, saying he was the most revered lawyer in Arkansas. Sam won.

Re: “GOP files suit over cars

As I mentioned yesterday, I saw a Constitutional Officer #4 license plate on a black GMC Yukon Denali at the Kroger's out Cantrell at 1:00 pm yesterday, driven by a small, dark haired woman. (Of course, anyone looks small in that outsized monster SUV.)

According to Wikipedia, Arkansas has seven constitutional offices, and #4 is listed as the Attorney General. Since Dustin McDaniel has reportedly given up his state vehicle, was #4 his car, and if so, who is driving it now?

Re: “Grading teachers

Why are we testing the students? Let's test the teachers. When I worked as an analyst for an investment banker/mortgage backed securities issuer back in the day when there was underwriting of risk, (what a concept), I had to take college level appraisal courses two times a year. I was sent to a university with hundreds of others from all over the country, and we took 13 week college level appraisal courses in 2 weeks. If you failed, you were fired, and 20% did, and were. It was nerve racking. But we learned our craft, and got better and better as we took tougher and tougher courses. We need to test the teachers at Ivy League level colleges and universities in common curriculum to apply an even playing field of knowledge to those teaching our children. That would improve education more that anything else.
