Re: “Football: Man's work y'all. Right?

Wally recently fired his assistant sports editor. The guy was dedicated to his job, providing decades of hard work. One day he walked into the office and within 10 minutes he was on the street, wondering what the fuck just happened. He didn't have a $4 million to $15 million safety net. He was lucky to get a paltry severance. Sounds like Wally and Cromer Peoples have more in common than Wally would like to admit.

Re: “CJRW removes Gary Heathcott from two major state ad accounts. UPDATE: he responds

Plainjim is right in that this is a "who's got the biggest dick?" fight between millionaires who will live happily ever after in their gated mansions, no matter what happens. The problem is that it's the struggling Arkansas taxpayer who is footing the bill for these do-nothing contracts that Asa hands out to his pals.

Re: “Road Trip 2017

Much of this is bullshit, particularly the obsequious praise of El Dorado and Bentonville-Springdale-Rogers.Yes, big money has created a thin veneer of "culture" and "entertainment" in these places, but scratch that veneer and you'll find grubby little backwater towns full of bigots and theocrats.

El Dorado continues to elect Bannon-type Republicans Sen. Trent Garner and Rep. Matthew Shepard, who want to shove their gun-lovin', God-shoutin' beliefs down our throats.

Northwest Arkansas gave us the gift that keeps on giving to itself -- former Sen. Jon Woods. Then there's Sen. Cecile Bledsoe, who would wear her Bible on her sleeve if there were a way to attach it. She also makes sure her family members get first dibs on any high-paying state jobs. Your tax money at work.

How odd that the Arkansas Times failed to mention the main attraction for Northwest Arkansas -- the fact that very few African-Americans live there. Those who do are practically invisible. Or wish they were invisible when they enter a restaurant and see all the shocked faces of the white customers.

So, ok, I realize these vignettes are just puff stuff to attract advertisers. But readers in other states should not be fooled and should go with their gut feeling that Arkansas is a poor, backward, uneducated, racist, homophobic state. It's Alabama with a different name. It's Mississippi with fewer black people.

Re: “The blood business: A supplier change in Central Arkansas

Are there no reporters who can call the local hospitals and ask why they prefer to acquire blood from an Oklahoma company rather than the Red Cross?

Re: “Walmart closing Riverdale market

Turn it into a jail for all the good Christian Republican legislators and "consultants" at the nearby Capitol building who are about to be indicted for thievery and kickbacks.

Re: “A throwback

HB's is an old-style Little Rock eatery of the kind that existed before all the flashy-trendy places sprang up. It's complacent with what it is. Its customers (fiercely loyal, as seen in the comments) are complacent with what it is. Sounds like HB's has figured out how to maintain a nice profit margin with low-cost Sysco/Ben Keith canned food, short open hours, cooking only certain amounts of food so there's no waste, no payback to credit card processors, which can range from 1.5% for Visa to 3% for American Express. (Restaurants, or any businesses, that accept credit or debit cards add that cost to their products, thus the customer actually pays the fee.) HB's appears to have a business plan that works for them but not for the reviewer.

It seems the reviewer was trying to offer some constructive criticism without understanding that HB's is not interested in the 2017 rat-race of glitz and expansion and chasing trends. HB's appears not to have much, if any, competition near its location. It can do what it wants, however it wants, while operating at a low cost and turning a comfortable profit (which is not easy to do without alcohol, which restaurants mark up at extortion prices).

That said, HB's could use a little sprucing up (the last time I was there I was a little uncomfortable with the hygienics), a menu overhaul (for the unwary customer, such as the reviewer) and a big sign on the door that says CASH ONLY.
