Warhol served 'A la cARTe'

But first, 2nd Friday Art Night.

ART NIGHT HIGHLIGHT: Donnangelo's pottery.

Martinis, fondue and Andy Warhol should make for a popular pop party Thursday, Oct. 20, when the Arkansas Arts Center Young Patrons Group hosts its first “a la cARTe” event in the Stella Boyle Smith Gallery.

Patrons of all ages are welcome to the event, created by the 45-and-under Young Patrons to replace the Art on Tap fund-raisers of the previous two years. Four more “a la cARTe” parties will be held on successive Thursdays, each at a different venue, including Nu Cuisine, two private homes and Mallard’s Bar at the Peabody Hotel.

The Arts Center’s five Warhols and works by the upcoming “a la caARTe” servings — Dale Chihuly, Vincent Van Gogh, Gottfried Helnwein and Diego Rivera — are on exhibit in the Smith gallery, the pass-through space that separates the Stephens and Strauss galleries.

Don’t expect a formal talk, event coordinator Molly Deere said; informational materials and whatever dirt the Arts Center’s bigwigs — including director Nan Plummer and curator Brian Young — can dish about Warhol et al will be served up, along with the music of the Velvet Underground, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person for the Warhol event, $30 for subsequent parties. Call 372-4000 to purchase tickets.

Receptions for nationally known artist and art historian Samella Lewis and Arkansans Warren Criswell, Janet Donnangelo, Stephano and others and a display on public art should make for a memorable 2nd Friday Art Night on Oct. 14.

The monthly event runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at downtown galleries Hearne Fine Art, where Lewis’ prints and oils are on view; River Market Artspace, which is featuring pottery by Donnangelo; the Historic Arkansas Museum, where “Warren Criswell: Moves” is on exhibit; the Cox Creative Gallery, where an exhibit of mock-ups and models for public art projects by seven Arkansas artists will be on display on the second floor and painter Robbye Dace will give a demonstration on the third floor; Amy Howard Richmond Fine Art, works by Steve Griffith; and Oval Art Gallery, featuring work by Stephano, Diane M.T. Jones and the “Big and Small Show.” Ten Thousand Villages fair trade store will also be open. Trolleys will transport people between venues for free.

Historian Lewis will give a lecture at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, on African American Art at the Arkansas Arts Center. A reception will precede the talk at 2 p.m.

The Cox Creative Center’s show on public art — which includes projects by Steven Ochs, Michael Warrick, Kevin Kresse, Pat Musick, John Deering, Bryan Massey and Hank Kaminsky — will serve as the backdrop for an Oct. 29 panel discussion on the subject moderated by Dr. Gayle Seymour of the University of Central Arkansas at Conway, a professor of art history and authority on public art.

A silent auction of work produced in new studio space in Maumelle is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at 10832 Maumelle Blvd., home of The Art Group Studio and Gallery. Half the proceeds will go to Hurricane Katrina victims via a Catholic services group.

The Art Group cooperative runs the Art Group Gallery, which provides workspace and exhibit space to its members. Local well-known artist Patrick Cunningham, who works and teaches art classes at the Gallery, hosted an Art Slam last Friday night in which artists working by flood lights acreated paintings and sculpture for the auction. Among the artists at the slam were Kevin Kresse, Anna Murry, Jeff Waddle and Tanya Hollifield. The portion of proceeds going to Katrina relief will be tax deductible. The rest will go to the artists.
