We recommend

We recommend

Vote FOR Barack Obama for president. An inspirational candidate committed to change is opposed by a tired old politician who promises more Bushenanigans. As if we hadn't had too many  already.

Vote AGAINST Initiated Act 1. It's religious bigotry that would deny aid to needy children and discriminate against adults.

AGAINST Referred Question 1. A bond issue of dubious merit. It can wait.

FOR Constitutional Amendment 1. Removes antiquated language — such as “idiot” — and allows more flexibility in the appointment of election officials.

AGAINST Amendment 2. Would allow annual sessions of the legislature.

FOR Sheriff Doc Holladay.

FOR Kathy Lewison for Pulaski County Quorum Court, District 3.

FOR John Edwards for state representative, District 38.

FOR Cathi Compton for circuit judge.

FOR Gary Sullivan for judge of the environmental division of Little Rock District Court.

FOR Pat Hays for another term as mayor of North Little Rock.

The Times makes no recommendation on Constitutional Amendment 3, the lottery amendment. Nor do we choose between two admirable candidates, Hugh Finklestein and Alice Lightle, in the race for judge of the criminal division of District Court.

After eight years of President George W. Bush, America's economy, health care, environment, national security and world reputation are heavily damaged. So is the Constitution, perhaps most of all; the administration has relentlessly advanced its radical  belief that the chief executive does as he wishes, unimpeded by judges, senators or private citizens. Civil liberties must ever give way to Big Government whim, in Bush's view.

It's true that Bush is not on the ballot this year, but only one of the candidates who is, Barack Obama, promises to correct Bush's  mistakes (or even honestly acknowledges them). What John McCain offers is more of the same, essentially — more bloody, pointless war-without-end in the Middle East, more profit for health-care companies and less health care for the sick, more abuse of natural resources, more compassion for the rich and indifference to the poor.

The choice is obvious. If Obama doesn't win this election, there will be grave and justified concern that America is no longer the country the world has always wanted it to be.

  • The end of an era

We're sad to report that Doug Smith has decided to retire. Though he's been listed as an associate editor on our masthead for the last 22 years, he has in fact been the conscience of the Arkansas Times. He has written all but a handful of our unsigned editorials since we introduced an opinion page in 1992.

  • A stand for equality

Last week, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel became the first elected statewide official to express support for same-sex marriage. His announcement came days before Circuit Judge Chris Piazza is expected to rule on a challenge to the state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Soon after, a federal challenge of the law is expected to move forward. McDaniel has pledged to "zealously" defend the Arkansas Constitution but said he wanted the public to know where he stood.

  • Same old, same old

Remarking as we were on the dreariness of this year's election campaigns, we failed to pay sufficient tribute to the NRA, one of the most unsavory and, in its predictability, dullest of the biennial participants in the passing political parade.

So what's it going to be, America: a democratic republic, or Trumpistan? A nation governed by the rule of law, or an oversized kleptocracy, whose maximum leader uses the decayed shell of government to punish his political enemies and reward friends and family?
