These winners of international competitions have performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Teatro Colon, Palau de la Musica Valenciana, Concertgebouw, Seoul Arts Center, Shanghai Theatre and Yerevan Philarmonic Hall. The members of the trio, which is based in New York, share an Armenian heritage and consist of violinist Sami Merdinian, cellist Ani Kalayjian, and pianist Sofya Melikyan. The program will include both “old and new”: Haydn’s Gypsy Trio; Dvorak’s Dumky Trio; Piano Trio composed by fellow Armenian Gayane Tchebodarian (1918 – 1998,) and Piano Trio by a young Russian composer, Lera Auerbach. Ms. Downes, of California, is presenting a program entitled “The Americans”, with music by American Composers of the 20th Century. This will include Barber’s Excursions, Thomson’s The Plow that Broke the Plains, Copland’s Three Pieces from Our Town, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The highlight for Little Rock audiences will be Fantasie Negre by Florence Price. Ms. Price was born in Little Rock in 1887, studied at the New England Conservatory of Music, and returned to Arkansas around 1905. She was a professor of music at Shorter College from 1906 – 1910. Ms. Downes has performed in such concert venues as the Queen Elizabeth Hall London, the Vienna Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center. Her appearances include collaborations with the Miami String quartet, and the Alexander String Quartet. Commissions and premieres of new works for Ms. Downes, include composers Aaron Jay Kernis, David Sanford, Benny Golson, Dan Coleman Jonathan Russell and Laurie San Martin. Calmus, a five-voice a cappella group from Leipzig, Germany, consists of a soprano, countertenor, tenor, baritone and bass. Tickets available at www.chambermusiclr.com.

The program will include pieces by Bach, Buchenberg, Gesualdo, and Purcell along with selections from Poulenc’s Huit chansons francaises, and Schumann’s Romanzen und Balladen, Op. 67. Calmus won 1st prize in the 2009 Concert Artists Guild International Competition in New York. Their active concert schedule includes appearances throughout Europe, North and South America. Other prestigious awards bestowed upon Calmus include First Prizes at the fourth annual Robert Schumann Choral Competition, the International Competition for Vocal Ensembles in Finland and the 37th Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain.

In 2009, this Canadian group was named the Julliard School’s Graduate Resident String Quartet. They are the 2008 winners of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition in New York and placed 2nd in the Munich ARD International Music Competition later that year. Afiara’s program for Little Rock will include Aleksandra Vrebalov’s Pannonia Boundless, Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 4 in E minor, Op. 44, No. 2, and Beethoven’s String Quartet in F Major.
