What's Cooking, Dec. 13

Famous Dave's Bar-B-Que has opened at 225 N. Shackleford Road in the former Tia's location. This is the second of four Famous Dave's franchises Hand Cut Steaks Inc. plans to open in Arkansas. The company took over ownership of Famous Dave's in Rogers in 2003. It also owns and operates Colton's, Saddle Creek and West End Smokehouse and Tavern in Arkansas and beyond. With outposts throughout 35 states, Famous Dave's boasts regional offerings, like “St. Louis-style” spare ribs, “Texas” beef brisket, “Georgia” chopped pork and an assortment of region-specific sauces. The Shackleford location is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. The phone number is 221-3283.

The downtown location of Cotija's Mexican Grill is planning to expand its dining room into an adjacent space previously occupied by the lounge of the Factory nightclub, which recently closed.

One of the booths at this week's Ark-La-Tex Medical Cannabis Expo was hosted by the Arkansas Hemp Association, a trade group founded to promote and expand non-intoxicating industrial hemp as an agricultural crop in the state. AHA Vice President Jeremy Fisher said the first licenses to grow experimental plots of hemp in the state should be issued by the Arkansas State Plant Board next spring.
  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
