What's Cooking, June 5

Capsule review

The Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce presents the fourth annual Taste of the Rock 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, June 5. Modeled after events like Taste of Chicago and Taste of Buffalo, the showcase features 34 local food vendors, all chamber members. The diverse lot include Aydelottes, Bobby's Country Cookin', Capriccio, Chick-fil-A, Ferneau, Flying Fish, Petit Jean Meats, Popeye's Chicken, Sonny Williams' Steak Room, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, U.S. Pizza and Velo Rouge Brasserie.

The chamber expects more than 1,000 guests. Admission, which covers food, beverage and entertainment, is $15 in advance and $20 at the door, space permitting.

CORRECTION: Last week, in an item about the newly formed Green Restaurant Alliance, Kathy Webb was incorrectly identified as a state senator. She is a representative. Nancy Tesmer, who co-owns Lilly's Dim Sum with Webb, is also a co-founder of the alliance.

UPDATE:

CANCUN Bored with all the downtown lunch spots and hungry for some Tex-Mex grub the other day, we decided to cross the river and hit up an old favorite that we hadn't visited in awhile: Cancun Mexican Restaurant in the Pike Avenue Shopping Center. We'd forgotten how quick a trip to Cancun is, even at lunch hour: just hop across the Broadway Bridge, take a left, and before you know it you're there, the whole journey taking less time than it would to find a parking space in downtown Little Rock. The food hit the spot as well. While Cancun has the humungo menu that is the hallmark of Mexican joints everywhere — with long lists of appetizers, combination platters, dinner specials and the like — what caught our hungry little eyes was the lunch-only all-you-can-eat menu, for only $6.50. This deal allows you to choose either from a set of 25 plate lunches, or up to four items at a time from an a la carte list that includes tacos, enchiladas, burritos, chalupas, chile rellenos, tamales, chile con queso and tostadas. And none of that bait and switch nonsense, either — when your plate gets low, a waitress swings by to put in your next order, and it's there before you can wipe your mouth good. In our case, Companion and I went for the taco eating world record. And what tacos they are: lots of seasoned beef, Monterey Jack cheese and lettuce in a flaky, made-in-house shell. Topped with a dash of their sweet salsa and paired with a mammoth glass of fruit punch, it's Tex-Mex heaven. The verdict: For a quick and tasty lunch, take a trip to Cancun. You're likely to see us there. 216 Pike Avenue, NLR. Beer and wine. CC $ 771-4262. LD daily.
