What's cooking/updates Dec. 16

What's cooking Canon Grill, at 2811 Kavanaugh Blvd., has become a non-smoking restaurant. The eatery previously had a small smoking section in back, according to manager Cole Treece. Osaka Japanese Restaurant, which opened during the summer on Highway 10, is offering $1 sushi on Mondays and Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and a sushi happy hour special on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Capsule reviews DOE’S EAT PLACE It’s all been said before about this well-worn skid-row eatery, crammed with Capitol power brokers at lunch and busy most nights with some of the same crowd, plus average folks who like big steaks, thick, crisp fries, spicy tamales and professional service that is attentive to a fault. To our way of thinking, there’s no prettier food picture than the city’s best hamburger, a tall and juicy creation, with the hot, hand-formed patty lapping over the edges of the warm bun, preferably dripping with a melted slice of pepper jack cheese. Fully dressed with mayo, tomato, lettuce and onion is how Lucille would have you eat it and Lucille ain’t never wrong. We admit, though, that the sight of a two-pound, two-inch-thick T-bone, its surface crusted by the industrial broiler, the interior pink clear through, almost made us rethink our idea of perfection. We were reminded on our last visit that Doe’s is the kind of place where you see stylish, dainty women tearing into bloody hunks of beef like this. We like that, too. 1023 W. Markham St. Little Rock, 376-1195 LD Mon.-Sat. $$-$$$ CC Full bar. HEAVENLY HAM You get a lot of bang for the buck at this small chain sandwich shop/caterer, which sells hams and frozen steaks and whole smoked turkeys besides sit-down offerings at about 10 tables. Shopping burns up the calories, so we stopped at the Market Place eatery lately and downed a Heavenly Ham sandwich, two thick pieces of ham and cheese on a croissant slathered with honey mustard and mayo and crunched up with lettuce. That and a glass of sweet tea was under $5. Then we tried a slice of cheesecake, pre-prepared by the Heavenly Ham company, and it was cheesecake the way we like it: Unadulterated with fruit or drizzled toppings and heavy as a brick. HH also sells whole pies and pound cakes to take home. There was no pecan pie, however; when we asked, we got a surprised look, as if few folks actually ordered it. So don’t count on it. Do count on a fresh sandwich though, and a helping hand during the holidays with whole meats. 11121 N. Rodney Parham Road, 225-2136. Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sat. $$ CC No alcohol.

Wait! Postpone tax reform and everything else for a while longer because the Senate is going to try to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act one more time before September ends and while it can do it with the votes of only 50 senators.
  • Sex on campus

Look, the Great Campus Rape Crisis was mainly hype all along. What Vice President Joe Biden described as an epidemic of sexual violence sweeping American college campuses in 2011 was vastly overstated.
