Re: “No open doors for Oxford House

Thank you Shannon Elliot and Gene Gammond. I am a resident of Oxford House Vieux Carre in New Orleans. I am continually saddened by folks who do not support the efforts of addicts and alcoholics to change their lives. It is also frustrating to read speculative comments about our finances from misinformed individuals and public officials. After treatment, Oxford House has given me the chance to become a responsible, productive member of society again. I could be the daughter, niece or sister of any of these naysayers, and, in fact, I am the daughter of a Vice Mayor who thankfully doesn't share these views. I hold an undergraduate and two master's degrees from well-respected universities. I had a thirteen-year career in state and federal politics, government and business. In my 30's, however, I succumbed to addiction and have had significant physical, financial, career, social, familial and legal consequences. I was no longer the person society respected or even welcomed. Oxford House is helping me start life over by allowing me to share minimal living expenses in a safe, supportive, sober environment. Because of the stability Oxford House has offered me, I am active in the recovery community, working as a pantry chef and pursing a third master's degree in public health policy. Why wouldn't a community embrace an organization that is positioned to make folks employable and responsible again, reduce recidivism and bring families back together? I wish these individuals could speak to our neighborhood association members, who view us as great contributors to the health and well-being of our community and greater society.
